Mysterious Creatures Of Ohio
Loveland Frog
The Loveland Frog is also known as the Loveland Lizard, & the Ohio Bridge Trolls. It's said to be humanoid looking, but with the face of a frog and is described as standing roughly 4 feet (1.2 m) tall with green leathery skin. It walks upright and has webbed hands and feet, and was allegedly first spotted in Loveland, Ohio. It is generally considered a cryptid which is a creature thought to be living, but with no confirmable proof. Others claim that it is a type of alien.
The first claimed sighting was in May 1955. A businessman is said to have seen three or four 3-foot (0.91 m)-tall, frog faced creatures squatting under a bridge near Loveland, Ohio. They were described as having wrinkles instead of hair on their heads, lopsided chests, and wide mouths without lips, like frogs. One of them is said to have held up a bar device that shed sparks. A strong odor of alfalfa and almonds was reportedly left behind.
For approximately twenty years, there were no further reported sightings of the Loveland Frog. On March 3, 1972, police were said to have seen a four-foot-tall frog-faced human-like creature with leathery skin, again near Loveland. It jumped over a rail and into the Little Miami River. Two weeks later, officer Mark Mathews saw it again, lying in the road. It got away as Mathews shot at it and apparently missed. The officer's description was supposedly reported as follows (this report has controversy as to if it credibility)... The creature was three to four feet tall, 50 to 75 pounds, leathery skin, possibly wet - matted hair on its body that made it look textured, possible tail, a head and face like a frog or lizard, and could leap over the roads' guard rail.
A local farmer is also said to have seen the Loveland frog later that month. Native Americans who once inhabited this same area, also sighted and told about this creature long before white man saw it. The Shawnee who used to live near the Loveland area, said they often sighted this creature during hunting. It's also reported that they once shot arrows at it, but the creature was unharmed & simply looked back at the Natives then dove into the river. The Shawnee said it was a supernatural being called a 'Shawnahooc' which means 'demon of the river'.
Sasquatch, Bigfoot, Grassman
Started with sightings by Native Americans. He was called numerous names by different native tribes, 'Sasquatch' was only one of over 50 names given to the creature. Grassman is a term used frequently in the Ohio & Kentucky regions.
This creature looks more like a hairy man, but very musculer, & tall. It is mostly reported as being between 6 - 8 feet tall, but has been reported to be seen with smaller offspring. The larger, adult male of the species is rugged, and built very muscular. It's shoulders are wide, and it has very little neck area. It has short brown to black hair covering it's body, with longer hair on the head. It stands, walks and runs on it's hindlegs similiar to a human. Most reports have the creatures eyes glowing or shining red in the dark when reflected by a flashlight or other light source.
They are said to frequently have a foul odor about them. Odors have been described as: rotten flesh, feces, old vomit, out-houses, rotted fish, rotten eggs, or foul and just sickening.
They are reported to give off sounds that range from ape-like grunts and growls, to almost a blood curdling scream like that of no other. Also whistles & calls. Some investigators have reported in hearing whispers of what sounds like human language in areas of heavily dense woods where many reports of Sasquatch have been reported.
Most Native American tribes seem to believe Sasquatch is very real. Some tribes believe it to be a shape-shifter having the ability to take on other forms. Others think that the creatures live in another dimension from the physical plane, but can come here as it wishes. Many Native Americans also belive sasquatch has great psychic abilities. There have been reports from others as well claiming such incidents such as thought communication (mental telepathy). Reports of sightings show the creature can be visible to some people, while at the same time remain invisible to others in the same group. There are many reports from people who saw the creature after a UFO sighting. And others that have searched for, and researched it for years are coming to the conclusion that the creature is a spirtual being, because he can appear or dissapear at will.
Many report that if one is walking in the woods and you hear the sound of a stick being hit against a hollow log or tree, beware, for this area is Sasquatch territory. People have reported that sometimes the stick hitting is loud or thud like, like a large log is being hit against a tree, or othertimes it is more like a small stick is being hit against a tree. Also stones are commonly said to be thrown at anyone intruding on their territory. Some Bigfoot researchers have reported sightings and/or hearing bigfoot sounds after they entered known bigfoot areas and started hitting a stick against a tree, then pausing. It's believed that this is a form of communication to other Sasquatch in the other. When entering a Sasquatch area it's also common to see huge limbs or even trees just simply snapped in two. Also huge piles of rocks or boulders as if to make a marker of some sort.
Various types of Sasquatch have been reported all around the world by various names. They vary in color, number of toes, & size depending on location.
Preble County was known for a sasquatch sighting in 1977 which had the entire area on a bigfoot hunt while others found it amusing & so set up pranks. It became known as "the year of Sasquatch" due to so many sightings. Shortly after the major sighting here, there was also a cattle mutilation found in west Alexandria. It was to a new calf that was half buffalo/half cow. Woodland Trails Boyscout Camp is also listed on a map called " Hidden Ohio" as having a reported Sasquatch sighting as well. This map list all kinds of paranormal reports from all over Ohio. Devil's Backbone area in Camden, Ohio is also known for many legends & sightings.

Note: I personally lived in Woodland Trails Boyscout Camp as a child. There was some unexplainable events that happened there, but no proof to what it was.
At one point & very suddenly, all of our animals (horses, donkey, rescued pet raccoon, & our dog) started acting comepletely terrified. I've never seen an animal so frightened! They all would watch toward a very specific area of woods at the edge of our property. The horses would not go near that section, but stayed as far away from it as possible. They would run with their eyes wide & snorting in fear. Our dog would sit right in front of the house looking that way & howl. Even the raccoon kept watching that direction & paced frantically in her cage. Myself & each member of our family had a very strong & eerie feeling of being watched. This continued for a around a week & then as suddenly as it started, it was gone & everything was back to normal. We never found any proof to what it was, but we did hear that someone did find extra large footprints in Woodland Trails that did not appear human. Another time, I walked down the hill to feed the horses which again were acting strange. The pen was near a section of woods that I normally played in. That day was different though. As I had to walk between the narrow passage between the tree line & fence, I had a strong feeling of fear & of being watched. as I looked into the woods, I caught glance of something upright, hiding behind a tree. It was dark in color & the feeling I got was very threatening & I didn't dare go into the woods that day.
Matt has sighted the Grassman near Seven Mile Creek, & he & I both smelled it. Rocks were also thrown at our van which we all three witnessed. John has heard it near this area as well. After these encounters, we moved to a Sasquatch hot spot in Pike County for 3 years. On almost a monthly basis we could hear tree knocking, eerie screams, hoops, whistles, & found a 15" footprint in a nearby wooded area. At one point Matt heard one scream from the forest across from our home, suddenly a very angry scream answered back from the forest behind our home. Keep your eyes open the next time you're near a wooded area, you never know who may be looking back!

Minerva Monster
The Minerva Monster was first spotted by the Cayton family in the late 1970’s. They followed the sound of their barking dogs to a pit on their property where they disposed of their trash. Much to their surprise, inside the pit, they found a massive, 7-foot tall, 300-pound creature, covered in fur, staring at them as the approached. It was reported that it returned often to their farm & was even witnessed by family & friends, & even investigated by the local sheriff. It's said that the house was pelted by rocks from two creatures before making their final appearance.
Other neighboring counties have reported similar sightings.

Cedar Bog Monster
The Cedar Bog Monster is yet another Sasquatch/Bigfoot of Ohio. The Cedar Bog was first opened as a nature preserve in 1942. Ohioans started reporting seeing a large, hairy, ape like creature.
After some teenagers went missing at the Bog, imaginations went wild, and the existence of the monster was solidified in the minds of the people. Were their fears valid? Nobody really knows for sure.
Shortly after, the bog was fenced in. The reason said is to keep people from wandering into it and also to keep deer and other wildlife from straying onto the road. However, hardcore fans of cryptozoology think it was designed to keep the creature inside.

Mothman
Mothman is reported to have been seen in different states of the U.S. before impending tragedy struck. These alleged sightings include the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York City and the explosive failure of the Chernobyl Nuclear Generating Station in the USSR (now Ukraine). This leads many people to believe that the Mothman (men) only appear before a major disaster probably in an attempt to warn people. There are even claims that the Mothman appeared before such historical disasters as the great San Francisco earthquake, the Great Chicago Fire, the Hindenburg explosion and the sinking of the Titanic. Mothman is however most known for the sightings at Point Pleasant,WV, which is directly across the river from Ohio.
The creature is said to stand between six to 9 feet tall, was wider than a man and shuffled on human-like legs. Almost all witnesses report that it had very large red glowing eyes. It's wings came high over it's shoulders & head Were leathery almost like bat wings that glided, rather than flapped, when it flew. It was able to ascend straight up into flight. Witnesses also described its skin as being a dark color, either gray or brown and it emitted a humming sound when it flew. It's believed the Mothman was incapable of speech and gave off a screeching sound.
On Nov. 12, 1966 near Clendenin, West Virginia. Five men were in a cemetery that day, digging a grave for a burial, when they saw something that looked similiar to a brown human with wings in a tree. It flew over their heads and left the men comepletely bewilderd. It wasn't a bird, but more
like a man with wings. A few days later, many more sightings started taking place, completely stiring up the entire region.
On Nov. 15, two young married couples had a strange encounter as they drove past the abandoned TNT plant near Point Pleasant, WV. The couples spotted a human like form although much bigger, around 6 or 7 feet tall & with large wings that were folded back against it's back. They could also see it's eyes which most often seem to be reported as red. The couples panicked and hurried away. Moments later, they saw the same creature on a hillside near the road. It spread its wings and flew into the air, following their car which was now going at least 100 miles per hour. It was reported that it stayed right with them even at such speeds. They told Deputy Sheriff Millard Halstead that it followed them down Highway 62 and right to the Point Pleasant city limits. Another group which included four witnesses, claimed to see the creature three different
times!
Yet another sighting had even stranger results. At about 10:30 on the same evening as the above story, Newell Partridge, a local building contractor who lived in Salem (about 90 miles from Point Pleasant), was watching TV when the screen suddenly went dark. He stated that a weird pattern
filled the screen and then he heard loud, whining sounds from outside that raised in pitch and then ceased. “It sounded like a generator winding up” he later stated. Partridge’s dog, Bandit, began to howl outside from the front porch and Newell went out to see what was going on. When he walked outside, he saw Bandit facing the barn, about 150 yards from the house. Puzzled, Partridge turned a flashlight in that direction and spotted two red circles that looked like eyes or “bicycle reflectors”. They looked nothing like that of a normal animal, and the sight frightened him. Bandit was an experienced hunting dog and protective of his territory, he ran across the yard in chase of the glowing red eyes. Partridge called for him to stop, but Bandit paid no attention. His owner hurried back into the house for his gun, but then was too scared to go back outside again. He slept with his
gun propped up next to the bed. The next morning, he realized that his dog had disappeared. Two days later sightings were reported in the newspaper about the same night of Partridge's experience. One statement in the newspaper shook many to the bone. Roger Scarberry, one member of the group who spotted the strange creature at the TNT plant, said that as they entered the city limits of Point Pleasant, they saw a large dog lying dead on the side of the road. A few minutes later, on the way back out of town, the dog was gone. They even stopped to look for the body, knowing they had passed it just a few minutes before. Newell Partridge immediately thought of Bandit, who was never seen again.
On November 16, a press conference was held in the county courthouse and the couples from the TNT plant sighting repeated their story. Deputy Halstead, who had known the couples all of their lives, took them very seriously. He told investigators that he had no reason to doubt their stories. Many of the reporters who were present felt the same way. The news of these strange sightings spread around the world. The press dubbed the odd flyingcreature “Mothman”, after a character from the Batman TV show.
It was believed that the remote and abandoned TNT plant became the
home of the Mothman and it couldn't have picked a better place to hide in. The area was made up of several hundred acres of woods and large concrete domes where explosives were stored during World War II. A network of tunnels honeycombed the area and made it possible for the creature
to move about without being seen. In addition, the area also had the McClintic Wildlife Station, which was a heavily forested animal preserve filled with woods, artificial ponds, steep ridges and hills. Much of the property was inaccessible and Mothman could have hid for months and remained totally unseen. The only people who ever wandered there were hunters and fishermen and the local teenagers, who used a part of the area as “lover’s lane”. Interestingly, the TNT area had also been built over scared Native American burial grounds. Many report ghosts of Native Americans can still be seen there.
On Nov.16th, one Point Pleasant family ( Ralph Thomas family ), spotted a strange red light in the sky that moved and hovered above the TNT plant. A friend of the Thomas family, Mrs. Marcella Bennett saw the lights & reported it could not be a plane, but we couldn’t figure out what it was. Mrs. Bennett drove on to the Thomas house and arrived a few minutes later. She got out of the car with her baby and suddenly, a figure moved near her car. “It seemed as though it had been lying down and rose up slowly from the ground. Bigger than a man with terrible glowing eyes.”
Mrs. Bennett was so horrified that she dropped her little girl! She quickly recovered, picked up her child and ran to the house. The family locked everyone inside, but hysteria gripped them as the
creature moved onto the porch and peered into their windows. They called the police, but the Mothman had vanished before they arrived. Mrs. Bennett did not recover well from the
incident. For months she had to seek medical help to deal with her anxieties. She was tormented by frightening dreams and later told investigators that she believed the creature had visited her own
home too. She said that she often heard strange sounds kinda like a woman screaming near her isolated home of Point Pleasant. Yet other strange events happened as well such as the "men in black". One such report was from a reporter named Mary Hyre, who was the Point Pleasant correspondent for the Athens, Ohio newspaper the Messenger, also wrote extensively
about the local sightings. In fact, after one very active weekend, she was overwhelmed with over 500 phone calls from people who saw strange lights in the skies. One night in January 1967, as she was working late in her office in the county courthouse, a man walked in the door. He was very
short and had strange eyes that were covered with thick glasses. He also had long, black hair that was cut squarely “like a bowl haircut”. Hyre said that he spoke in a low, halting voice and he asked for directions to Welsh, West Virginia. She thought that he had some sort of speech impediment and for some reason, he terrified her. “He kept getting closer and closer to me, “ she said, “ and his funny eyes were staring at me almost hypnotically.” Alarmed, she called the newspaper’s
circulation manager to her office and together, they spoke to the strange little man. She said that at one point in the discussion, she answered the telephone when it rang and she noticed the little man pick up a pen from her desk. He looked at it in amazement, “as if he had never seen a pen before.”
Then, he grabbed the pen, laughed loudly and ran out of the building. Several weeks later, Hyre was crossing the street near her office and saw the same man on the street. He appeared to be
startled when he realized that she was watching him, turned away quickly and ran for a large black car that suddenly came around the corner. The man climbed in and it quickly drove away.
Many would come to believe that the sightings of Mothman, as well as UFO sightings and encounters with “men in black” in the area, were all related. For thirteen months, strange happenings continued in the area. Researchers, investigators and “monster hunters” researched the area but none so famous as author John Keel, who has written extensively about Mothman and other unexplained anomalies. He has written for many years about UFO’s but dismisses the standard “extraterrestrial” theories of the mainstream UFO movement. For this reason, he has been a controversial figure for decades. According to Keel, humans have a long history of interaction with the supernatural. He believes that the intervention of mysterious strangers in the
lives of historic people like Thomas Jefferson and Malcolm X provides evidence of the continuing presence of the so called “gods of old”. The manifestation of these elder so called "gods" comes in the form of UFO’s and aliens, monsters, demons, angels and even ghosts. He wrote that at least 100 people came forth reporting the strange sightings, & it's believed that many more saaw, but were afraid to admit it. He is respected in the field for his research and fascinating writings and became the major chronicler of the Mothman case. John Keel arrived in Point Pleasant in December 1966 and immediately began collecting reports of Mothman sightings and even UFO reports from before the creature was seen. He also compiled evidence about cars strangly stalling out, problem with TVs and phones that began around the time that the Mothman sightings occured. The strange lights seen in the skies, particularly around the TNT plant. He and his fellow researchers also uncovered a number of short-lived poltergeist cases in the Ohio Valley area. Locked doors opened and closed by themselves, strange thumps were heard inside and outside of homes and often,
inexplicable voices were heard. The James Lilley family, who lived just south of the TNT plant, were so bothered by the bizarre events that they finally sold their home and moved to another neighborhood. Keel was convinced that the intense period of activity was all connected.
At around 5:00 in the evening on December 15, 1967, the 700-foot bridge (Silver Bridge) connecting Point Pleasant to Ohio suddenly collapsed while filled with rush hour traffic.
Dozens of vehicles plunged into the dark waters of the Ohio River and 46 people were killed. Two of those were never found and the other 44 are buried together in the town cemetery of Gallipolis, Ohio. The mothman was reported to have been seen on the bridge just prior to it going down. It is believed by many that he was trying to warn people of the coming tragedy. Others believe he caused it. On that same tragic night, the James Lilley family (who still lived near the TNT plant at that time) counted more than twelve eerie lights flashing above their home and then vanished into the forest. The tragedy is still being felt today.
During Christmas week, a short, dark-skinned man entered the office of Mary Hyre. He was dressed in a black suit, with a black tie, and she said that he looked vaguely Oriental. He had high
cheekbones, narrow eyes and an unidentified accent. He was not interested in the bridge disaster, she said, but wanted to know about local UFO sightings. Hyre was too busy to talk with him and she handed him a file of related press clipping instead. He was not interested in them and insisted on speaking with her. She finally dismissed him from her office. That same night, an identically described man visited the homes of several witnesses in the area who had reported seeing the
lights in the sky. He made all of them very uneasy and uncomfortable and while he claimed to be a reporter from Cambridge, Ohio, but inadvertently admitted that he did not know where Columbus, Ohio was even though the two towns are only a few miles apart. Whatever the creature may have been, it seems clear that Mothman has not been a hoax. There were simply too many credible witnesses who saw “something”. The case is filled with an impressive number of multiple-witness sightings by individuals that were deemed reliable, even by law enforcement officials. John Keel believes that Point Pleasant was a “window” area, a place that was marked by long periods of strange sightings, monster reports and the coming and going of unusual persons. He states that it
may be wrong to blame the collapse of the bridge on the mothman, or local UFO sightings, but the intense activity in the area at the time does suggest some sort of connection. Others have pointed to possibly a different supernatural link to the strange happenings, blaming the events on a curse from a Native American who was treated wrongly around the 1770's and killed in Point Pleasant. His name was Cornstalk.
Locals of Point Pleasant & surrounding areas, still report strange occurances & feelings of being watched. Similiar reports have been made around the world. Some are even wondering if this creature could be one in the same, or connected to a creature seen in London which is called the Highgate Vampire by the British media. The most recent report that I have been able to find in the U.S. was actually here in Ohio near the Cincinnati area in 2009, as well as in April of 2009 in Chihuahua, Mexico.
Note- Our team got to do a very brief investigation of Point Pleasant,WV. While we can't say that we found the Mothman, we did capture a strange face appearing in an unsual mist on the present day bridge entering Point Pleasant,W.V., feelings of being watched when investigating the TNT bunkers, as well as orb pictures. The picture of the face on the bridge can be seen on our photo page.

Mothman has been seen in multiple places around Ohio, & seen in other states as well. There are even reports that some have seen human size cocoons during times of Mothman sightings. This brings up a whole new set of theories & questions! That would mean there is definitely more than one & they are breeding. Also, if the use of a cocoon is used, what are they? What do they look like before their transformation?! www.phantomsandmonsters.com/2015/12/mothman-eyewitness-accounts.html Our team has recently been contacted about a Mothman sighting in the Cincinnati, OH area that included a sighting of a human size cocoon.

Phantom Panther
Black Panthers, also called Phantom Panthers by many, these big mysterious cats have been reported seen through Ohio, Michigan, & Kentucky. Cincinnati police have gotten multiple reports & even found footprints. Not much is known about them or where they come from. In most cases, no missing animals have been reported by any zoos, petting zoos, or private owners. While they may not be paranormal, it is still very intriguing that such an animal can & apparently does exist in these states. If such a creature can remain mostly hidden & unknown, I believe this gives even more credibility that the Sasquatch can also exist.

The Wendigo/Windigo
Most people use these two spellings interchangeably to describe the same being, but some believe the words have different meanings. Those who believe there's a difference, describe the "wendigo" as a lonely man-beast who lives in the forest waiting to feast on human flesh, while the "windigo" is a cannibalistic spirit that possesses humans. Both beliefs came from Native American folklore/belief and have ties to cannibalism.
The Windigo is an alleged creature that has been believed in by many cultures for centuries, especially with the Native Americans. It is said that it lives in the Northern States such as the Great Lakes area, Minnesota & north into Canada. All cultures in which the Wendigo myth appeared, shared the belief that human beings could turn into Wendigos if they ever resorted to cannibalism or, alternatively, become possessed by the demonic spirit of a Wendigo, often in a dream. Once transformed, a person would become violent and obsessed with eating human flesh. Most popular belief is that anyone who ate human fleash had the biggest chance of transforming into this creature. Though descriptions varied some, common to all these cultures was the conception of Wendigos as malevolent, cannibalistic, supernatural beings of great spiritual power. At the same time, Wendigos were embodiments of gluttony, greed, never being satisfied after killing and consuming one person, they were constantly searching for new victims. In some traditions, humans who became overpowered by greed could turn into Wendigos. The Wendigo belief thus served as a way of encouraging the values of cooperation and moderation.
Among the Ojibwe, Eastern Cree, Westmain Swampy Cree, Naskapi, and Innu, Wendigos were said to be giants, many times larger than human beings (a characteristic absent from the Wendigo belief in the other Algonquian cultures). Whenever a Wendigo ate another person, it would grow in proportion to the meal it had just eaten, so that it could never be full. Wendigos were therefore simultaneously constantly gorging themselves and emaciated from starvation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendigo
One of the most widely reported cases of a windigo spirit possessing a human is that of Swift Runner, a Native American trapper who murdered and ate his entire family in the winter of 1879. They lived only 25 miles from food supply at the Hudson Bay Company Post. He claimed to be possessed by a Windigo at the time of the murders and was hanged for his crime. Although his case is one of the most well known historically, there were many reports in the early 20th century of Windigo spirits possessing people in dozens of communities from northern Quebec to the Rockies.

The Ohio Dogman
Described as being similar to a werewolf creature. It's said to be between 4 - 6 feet tall, typically muscular, and with gray or pink skin. Dogman has reportedly been seen all throughout Ohio, including Franklin County. It is sometimes seen on all fours or walking bipedally.
On August 27, 2005, a truck driver named Scott called into the Coast to Coast
radio show and told host Ian Punnett of his strange sighting. He claims that while driving, his
truck's headlights illuminated something strange. It appeared some kind of beast was crouched
on the side of the road eating a deer. He described it as looking like a cross
between "an ape with a dog's head" and the werewolf from the horror film Van
Helsing. http://paranormal.about.com/od/othercreatures/a/aa100305.htm , http://www.dogmanresearch.com/2013/07/ohio-sightings.html
Well known cryptid researcher Ken Gerhard has organized a Dogman symposium in Defiance, Ohio which would be great for anyone interested in learning more.

Ohio Werewolf
Rumor has it that the now Resurection cemetery in Delphos, Ohio was once the stomping ground to real life werewolves. This was during the Great Black Swamp Days. Kurt Gorden who is a resident of Delphos, claims “When I was a kid, we used to have church campouts along the Auglaize River next to the cemetery and the priest would tell some pretty wild stories about werewolves in the area.” http://www.cryptomundo.com/bigfoot-report/werewolf/
Another well known case was in Defiance, Ohio in August 1972. The attacks occurred between 1:30am to 4:20am. There was actually multiple sightings there. On three occasions, sightings were near the Norfolk and Western railroad tracks in the vicinity of Fifth Street and Swift and Co. According to Defiance Police Department, one man was attacked and struck on the shoulder with a two-by-four, however managed to get away from the assailant. The two other attempts on residents (both men), were not successful, so the police department can't say if the motive is robbery, to scare people, or perhaps to eat human flesh as in a Hollywood movie. However no one has reported any bites. He, she or it, is described as very tall around 6'-8' feet tall with some kind of an animal head.
Police Chief Don F. Breckler today said if anyone sees the "subject" they should not attempt to apprehend him but call the department immediately, giving a description and the direction in which he was heading.
A woman called the Defiance Police Department and reported a possible excursion by "the wolfman". She reported that she heard scratching at the door & that something was rattleling her door knob. She said that if anything came through it, she would shoot it. http://www.werewolfpage.com/myths/Defiance%20.htm - Info on this occurance

Lake Erie Monster (South Bay Bessie)
Bessie is the nickname given by the town of Huron, OH in Erie County. It is described as being a snake like creature around 30' to 40' in length. Colors reported are mostly gray, but also include reports of gray/blue, dark brown, greenish/blue, & greenish/brown. Skeptics claim that the lake monster is nothing but a common Sturgeon which can grow extremely large. Others claim it was much larger & even fierce. The first report of Bessie is said to have been in 1793. There are many historical reports of Bessie which include a news paper article a 1898 article from the Daily Register. The monster was reported to live both in water & on land. A flurry of reports happened in the 1990's. By 1993 the "Bessie" mania was in full swing. The city of Huron took particular interest in using the lake monster to attract tourism. The city soon produced a crop of pseudo-cryptozoologists and declared itself the National Live Capture and Control Center for the Lake Erie Monster. Tom Solberg of the Huron Lagoons Marina offered a $100,000 reward for the safe and unharmed capture of the beast. The reward has never been claimed.

Crosswick Monster
The Crosswick monster was seen around 20 miles North of Loveland, OH, near Waynesville. It is describes as being a giant salamander looking creature, 12' to 16' foot tall & 30' to 40' feet long. Reportedly, two young boys were playing around a creek bank when they were attacked by this monster that resembled a snake with legs. The story goes that one of the boys was snatched up by this monster & was drug around 100' feet to a huge 26' diameter, sycamore tree that was believed to be it's den. Some men arrived to rescue the boy as he was being drug into the hollowed out den. Armed with axes, the men chopped through the tree & pulled out the monster which due to it's massive size & strength, got away, never to be seen again.
The Charles Mills Lake Monster
Seen in March 28th 1959 by three teenage buddies, — Denny Patterson, Wayne Armstrong and Michael Lane. They said they were near Ruggles road, near the swampy shores of the Charles Mill Lake Resorvior in Mansfield, OH. Their encounter was during the night hours when they saw a large aquatic beast rise up from the black water.
They described it as a 7' foot humanoid with no arms, glowing eyes & webbed feet. In 1985 an author "Loren Coleman" who studies cryptozoology, published a book called "Curious Encounters" in which he spoke about this creature. He wrote...“The thing was seen again in 1963 and described as ‘luminous and green-eyed.’” “I examined the site of these encounters and can testify to the Charles Mill Lake’s swampy affinities — certainly a good home for a Black Lagoon beast.”
Every now and again, folks from that region still claim to discover strange tracks that resemble huge, webbed feet near the boggy coast of the reservoir.

Orange Eyes of Charles Mill Lake
Apparently Charles Mill Lake is the place to go for various creatures. Not to be confused by the Lake Monster, it is reported to be more than 11 feet tall & weigh around 1,000 lbs. Orange Eyes lurks near Mansfield, Ohio, but is said to have originated in the Cleveland area.
It was spotted in 1991 & was spotted by two fishermen in Mill Creek, before retreating into a near by wooded area.
Some locals believe that Orange Eyes was actually an alien being, due to the fact that a green beam and UFO were spotted in the area in the 1970’s. Whatever Orange Eyes is, it hasn’t been seen in over 20 years, or at least no one has been brave enough to report it.

The Highland County Creature
On December 4th 2014, a 60 year old former marine & resident of the area, saw a strange creature along Carmel Rd.
Ron McGlone, an investigator with Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), said "The witness was driving near Carmel, came up over a hill and saw a 7' tall slim, gray creature with muscular legs that walked like its knees were backwards.
The residents report... "We recently bought a place in the Fort Hill area (in southeast Highland County). We first noticed after about 30 days of living here that we suddenly have a perfect circle that stays fresh green, no matter what weather, in our front yard. On Friday night (the 12th), we were driving home. After turning on Carmel Road, which leads to our road, we went around the curve by the Carmel church and then up a small incline and approximately 10 feet over the incline and in front of our truck, the 'alien' ran across the road and into the woods.
"My husband saw it. He is a skeptic – almost 60 years old – and a proud Marine. He wouldn't have admitted to seeing it if he hadn't been in shock. I had him draw it for me when we got to the house. He says it was asphalt gray (our asphalt is gray) and about 7 feet tall, no arms that he could see, but muscular in the legs area; no jawline, and its legs were bent backward and it leaned forward as it ran."If anyone in the Carmel area has information on what the object might be, he or she may contact McGlone at: [email protected] or [email protected].

Melon Heads
The Melon Heads are said to be in Ohio, Michigan, & Connecticut. They are typically described as small huminoid figures, around 3' - 4 ' feet tall, with large, bald & bulbous heads, & that they jump out of hiding to attack & eat the flesh of anyone that dares go into their area. For now we will discuss the Michigan & Ohio Melonheads.
In Michigan it's said that they reside in the area of the Felt Mansion, although there's reports in the southern forested areas of Ottawa County as well. The story goes that these beings were actually children with hydrocephalus who where they were victims of both physical & mental abuse at the local asylum until being released into the forest to survive on their own, becoming feral. Other stories are said that they actually killed the mean doctor & escaped to the forest, living in a system of caves & caverns. The legend is widely spread & the 2011 movie "The Melonheads" was actually based on the legends of these creatures.
The Ohio Melonheads is said to be from the Kirkland area which is a Cleveland suburb. There's more than one version of the Ohio Melonhead legend, with the most popular being that they were actually orphans under the care of a Dr Crowe (Also sometimes spelled Crow, Krohe, or Kroh). It's said that he preformed unusual experiments on these kids, causing large out of proportion heads, bald, & deformed bodies. As the legend of Michigan, some in Ohio share the belief that these children already suffered with hydrocephalus, but that Dr Crowe injected even more fluid on their brain. It's said that the children, tired of the abuse, killed Dr Crowe, burned the orphange done, & escaped to the forest to survive on whatever flesh that they could find.
A different version of Dr Crowe exist. In this story Dr Crowe & his loving wife were actually given a group of kids with hydrocephalus to care for in their remote cabin. Supposedly the towns people were very cruel to the children so Mrs Crowe become very protective over the children which caused them to see her as a mother figure. Unfortunately, when Mrs Crowe passed away the children's world came crashing down & they could not cope with the emotional pain. As DR Crowe tried to calm them the kids to no avail, a lantern was knocked over catching the cabin on fire, killing Dr Crowe & all of the kids. The claims are that the sightings of the "Melonheads" are the ghosts of these children.
Others claim that it was a horrible government experiment gone bad. This version seems to portray them as more passive & curious for human interaction, than flesh eating villains. The most reported sightings come from the area of Wisner Rd in Kirkland, & Chardon Township.
Whatever version you choose to believe, it's said that Wisner Road in Kirtland cuts through the heart of Melonhead country. If you drive beyond the "Crybaby" bridge which is located on a small dirt road, you will soon find yourself at a dead end. Locals claim that there's a foot trail that continues beyond the dead end & leads deep into the woods & to the burnt ruins of the original Melonheads homestead. Warning - There are private residences in this area & I'm told a horse stable as well. It is never okay to trespass, or bother people. Please be respectful to those living there & if going out, drive slow & careful so as not to spook any horses that might be out. As a former horse person, I know many are not aware that spooking a horse can result in severe injury, or even death of the rider.
